Beware answering these phone numbers

With scam calls screened and blocked by Genie everyday, we thought it would be important to share the most common phone numbers to beware of, with the hope of keeping you protected.

We are counting down the top 3 scam callers that Genie has blocked recently.

#3: 737-874-2833 & 737-874-2833 - Amazon Account Scammers

Scammers are well aware of our tendency to shop frequently on Amazon and have devised this method to trick us into giving away our credit card information!

This very common scam number is targeting individuals claiming to be from Amazon to confirm a purchase of an item, which they have not actually bought. They are also told they can press a number if they wish to cancel the order.

Tom Stephens, president of the Better Business Bureau says, “this is a scam that started circulating about a year ago. The scammers are after your credit card number... The scammers can be very convincing and are good at tricking people into answering questions that can give the bad guys personal information”

If you don't have Genie to block these calls for you: Make sure that if you receive a call asking you to press a number to cancel the order - do not press anything. Hang up immediately and manually block the caller.

Example transcript from one of these calls:

'this call is to authorize a payment of $999 we would like to inform you that there is an order placed for Apple iPhone 11 Pro using your Amazon account if you do not need arises this order press one or press two to authorize this order', 'is Amazon this call is to authorize a payment of $999 we would like to inform you that there is an order placed for Apple iPhone 11 Pro using your Amazon account page if you do not authorize this order press one or press two to authorize this order', 'this call is to authorize the payment of $999 we would like to inform you that there is an order placed for Apple iPhone 11 Pro using your Amazon account if you do not authorize this order press one or press two to authorize this order', 'hello this is Amazon this call is to authorize a payment of $999 we would like to inform you that there is an order placed for Apple iPhone using your Amazon account if you do not authorize this order press one or press two to authorize this order', 'this call is to authorize a payment of $999 we would like to inform you that there is an order placed for Apple iPhone 11 Pro using your Amazon account if you do not authorize this order press one or press two to authorize this order.

#2: 980-261-9728 - Scammer offering vacation giveaway

Genie has blocked a lot of calls from this number recently. It’s from a scammer claiming that you could win a complimentary stay in a hotel at a vacation of your choosing. If you don't have Genie to block these calls on your behalf, make sure you hang up immediately and block them manually as this is just the latest way that scammers are trying to get you to share your personal information and credit card number with them.

Example transcript from one of these calls:

#1: 980-423-1877 - Scammer offering “extra cash”

This scam caller is offering a get-rich-quick scheme, but they are really after your personal information like credit card number and Social Security number for identity theft.

According to reports from individuals who have answered this call, “the phone call begins with a pre-recorded message that is generated using text-to-speech translation software to disguise the origin of this India scam, and if you answer the call, you are then transferred to what sounds like a noisy boiler room in India.”

Again we’d like to stress, if you don't have the Genie app to block these calls for you, make sure you don’t interact with the caller and block the number immediately.

Example transcript from one of these calls:

Mary if you're interested in ethically making some extra cash without lifting a finger press one now once again if you would like to make some extra cash without lifting a finger press one now off the DNC list press 9 hey this is Mary if you're interested in ethically making some extra cash without lifting a finger press one now once again if you would like to make some extra cash without lifting a finger brown one now for the DNC list press 9
